Walter Sidney Meader, son of Levi Meader (1813-1885) [0156] and Amanda Eastman (1817-1888), was born in Gonic, NH March 11, 1857 and died in Dover, NH in February, 1938. Graduating From Friends' Boarding School (Moses Brown School) in Providence, and from Brown University in 1880 where he also received his M.A. degree in 1883, he excelled in sports as well as scholastically. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and earned his Phi Beta Kappa key in his junior year. After teaching at Friends' School for 25 years, he returned, to New Hampshire with his family and joined his brothers at the Gonic Manufacturing Company. He remained in Gonic until his retirement in 1916, when he moved to the home on Sixth Street in Dover in which he had lived for a time with his sister Sarah when he was a child.
A birthright member of the Society of Friends, he was Clerk of the New England Yearly Meeting for many years and was active in the Gonic Meeting as well as in the Dover Quarterly Meeting.
His interests were varied: The study and teaching of mathematics and astronomy as well as the teaching and writing of poetry. Through him, his children learned to appreciate great literature as well as the beauty of nature and the world around, and to marvel at the wonders of the universe.
July 2, 1890 he married Lucy Jones Hawkes, born September 20, 1865 the daughter of Isaac Warren Hawkes and Sarah Sampson in Manchester, ME. She died November 29, 1952.
